About the department:

The Department of Surgery for Newborns and Young Children of the Kyiv Perinatal Center provides highly specialized surgical care to children from birth to 6 years of age.

We treat congenital malformations, surgical diseases, and urgent conditions requiring emergency or planned surgery.

The department is designed for 10 beds with the possibility of mother and child staying together, which allows for comfort and psychological support for young patients.

Medical care is provided around the clock by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, neurosurgeons, and anesthesiologists.

Main areas of work of the department

Surgery for congenital malformations

The department performs diagnostics and surgical treatment of:

  • congenital lung pathologies;
  • tracheomalacia;
  • volumetric formations of the thoracic and abdominal cavities;
  • esophageal atresia;
  • gastroschisis;
  • omphalocele;
  • diaphragmatic hernias;
  • malformations of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • Hirschsprung’s disease;
  • anorectal atresias.

Pediatric gynecological surgery

Operations are performed by pediatric gynecologists in collaboration with pediatric surgeons, neonatologists and anesthesiologists.

We perform surgical treatment for:

  • synechia of the labia minora requiring surgical correction;
  • cysts and other benign formations of the external genitalia;
  • inflammatory complications requiring surgical treatment;
  • urgent gynecological conditions

Operations are performed using gentle minimally invasive methods, which ensures rapid recovery of young patients.

Minor elective surgical interventions
The department performs minor surgical interventions:

  • plasty of the short frenulum of the tongue;
  • removal of parotid glands;
  • removal of benign neoplasms (atheromas, lipomas, cysts, hemangiomas);
  • treatment of phimosis (including ritual circumcisions).

Neurosurgical care

A separate important area of work is pediatric neurosurgery.

Neurosurgical care in the perinatal period is most often aimed at treating complications of prematurity and hypoxic lesions of the central nervous system.

This area is coordinated by pediatric neurosurgeon, Candidate of Medical Sciences Zyabchenko Vadim Ivanovych.

Treatment of hydrocephalus and intraventricular hemorrhages

Modern treatment methods are used:

Ventricular punctures
temporary removal of excess cerebrospinal fluid to reduce intracranial pressure.

Ventricular-subgaleal shunts
formation of temporary outflow of cerebrospinal fluid under the scalp.

Installation of an Ommaya reservoir
implantation of a device for periodic drainage of cerebrospinal fluid or administration of medications.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt
permanent drainage of cerebrospinal fluid into the abdominal cavity.

Correction of congenital defects of the nervous system

  • Closing of spinal hernias (spina bifida);
  • Operations for craniosynostosis;
  • Treatment of arachnoid cysts.

Endoscopic neurosurgical interventions

  • Ventric ventriculostomy of the bottom of the III ventricle (ETV);
  • Septostomy;
  • Endoscopic interventions for brain cysts;
  • Biopsies of formations.

Emergency care for injuries
Urgent neurosurgical operations are performed, in particular:

Removal of epidural and subdural hematomas, which may occur as a result of difficult childbirth or injuries.

Intensive care and anesthesia support

The department provides a full range of anesthetic care and intensive care for newborns and young children who require surgical treatment.

Anesthesia is provided by pediatric anesthesiologists with experience working with newborns, premature babies, and very low birth weight patients.

Before surgery, each child undergoes a thorough preoperative assessment, which allows us to choose the safest anesthesia method and minimize risks.

During operations, modern methods of general anesthesia, monitoring of vital functions, and individually selected analgesia are used, which ensures the safety and comfort of patients.

After surgery, if necessary, children are supervised in the neonatal and young child intensive care unit, where:

  • 24-hour monitoring of vital signs;
  • respiratory support;
  • infusion therapy;
  • control and treatment of postoperative pain;
  • correction of violations of vital functions.

Modern equipment and experience of medical personnel allow to ensure a high level of safety of surgical interventions even in the smallest patients.

Outpatient neonatology team

The Perinatal Center has a mobile neonatal team that provides transportation of newborns in critical condition.

Its own resuscitation vehicle and a highly qualified team of doctors allow us to transport newborns from maternity hospitals in Kyiv around the clock for specialized surgical care.

Our advantages

  • highly specialized care for newborns and young children;
  • a multidisciplinary team (pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, neonatologists, anesthesiologists);
  • experience in treating premature babies with very low body weight;
  • use of modern minimally invasive surgical technologies;
  • availability of a mobile neonatal team and resuscitation vehicle;
  • the possibility of mother and child staying together.
