Where to turn to the expectant mother regarding pregnancy management

For pregnancy monitoring, you can choose any communal or private medical institution that has a contract with the National Health Service for the “Management of Pregnancy in Outpatient Conditions” package.

Management of pregnancy by an obstetrician-gynecologist is free of charge both in the case of self-referral without a referral, and in the presence of a referral from a family or attending physician.

As part of the package “Management of pregnancy in outpatient conditions”, the patient receives the following types of services:

  • dynamic monitoring of pregnancy
  • carrying out the necessary laboratory tests: from comprehensive blood analysis to tests for viruses and perinatal infections
  • conducting instrumental examinations: ultrasound with Doppler, transvaginal ultrasound cervicometry, colposcopy,
  • cardiotocography, electrocardiography, etc.
  • carrying out prenatal screening
  • prevention of Rhesus sensitization by administration of anti-Rhesus D immunoglobulin
  • referral to a perinatal (if signs of abnormalities, congenital, or hereditary pathology are detected in the fetus) or multidisciplinary (if the patient is identified as having a high risk of pregnancy) consultation
  • post-contact prevention of sexually transmitted infections in case of gender-based violence
  • provision of complete information on the course of pregnancy, features of an individual pregnancy and childbirth management plan
  • providing information to the patient about conditions in which medical assistance should be sought, perinatal care facilities in which a woman, depending on her health and the condition of the fetus, is recommended to give birth, etc.

If the patient needs hospitalization, the gynecologist refers her to a hospital, where she will receive all the necessary medical care also free of charge, as part of the hospital package.

Medical assistance during childbirth is free of charge, regardless of the place of residence

Neither the place of registration nor the actual place of residence is a basis for payment of medical assistance. In institutions that have a contract with the National Health Service of Ukraine, medical assistance during childbirth is free of charge, its cost is covered by the National Health Service of Ukraine. Therefore, patients with IDP status do not have to pay anything extra for receiving medical care, in particular during childbirth.

Medical assistance during childbirth is provided free of charge both when an emergency (ambulance) medical team delivers, and when self-referral without a referral.

During childbirth, the patient who gives birth receives all the necessary medicines, medical products, analgesia, and laboratory tests free of charge:

  • medical assistance during childbirth with an on-call obstetric team
  • partner childbirth
  • management of uncomplicated and complicated births
  • emergency or scheduled caesarean section
  • monitoring of the state of childbirth and the fetus
  • use of painkillers: analgesics, epidural or spinal analgesia, etc.
  • anesthesiological support of operative interventions and obstetric procedures
  • laboratory and instrumental research 24/7
  • consultation by doctors of other specialties;
  • providing post-contact ART prophylaxis to children born to HIV-positive mothers
  • carrying out a number of newborn screenings (serological examination for HIV and syphilis, critical congenital heart defects and other diseases according to the program of extended screening of newborns)
  • assessment of hearing in newborns;
  • vaccination of the baby according to the calendar of preventive vaccinations
  • counseling on breastfeeding and postpartum contraception;
  • ensuring the provision of the complex electronic service “E-Malyatko”;
  • food in hospital conditions, etc.

How to find a medical institution contracted with the National Health Service

  • Call the contact center of NSZU at number 16-77. Select a connection with the operator and ask where the nearest facilities that provide care for pregnancy or childbirth are.
  • Find the institutions with a contract with the NHSHU on your own using the online map on the dashboard “Concluded contracts for medical care of the population under the medical guarantee program”. To search, you need to apply the “Group of services” filter, select the package “35. Pregnancy management in outpatient conditions” or “7. Medical assistance during childbirth”, and also specify the desired settlement. Therefore, pregnancy support and medical assistance during childbirth are services that are paid for by the National Health Service within the framework of the Medical Guarantee Program.
