A boy with a complex diagnosis of Spina bifida, who underwent surgery at the Perinatal Center, is already home.

From birth, Artemchyk, that’s the name of the little hero, has been struggling with a severe developmental disability.
The disability was discovered immediately after birth. The subcutaneous lipoma grew along with the child’s growth. After an MRI of the lumbar spine, the team of the Kyiv Perinatal Center, led by pediatric neurosurgeon Vadim Zyabchenko, performed a carefully planned intervention. The spinal hernia-lipoma was removed and the spinal cord fixation was removed with intraoperative neuromonitoring.
This was vital, because as the child grows, the tension on the spinal cord could lead to severe neurological deficits. Most babies with severe forms of spina bifida have significant mobility limitations, but Artemchyk’s prognosis is good.

Today, his every movement is the result of a joint struggle between parents and doctors. For a very short age, he has undergone a complex operation, a month in the hospital, numerous examinations and a great desire for a full life. Artemchyk is cheerful, active, with inquisitive eyes, and continues to learn about the world.
We sincerely thank the NGO “Mother and Baby” for invaluable help with consumables and care. Together we give children a chance for a happy childhood.
The staff of the Perinatal Center of Kyiv wishes Artemchyk good health and good luck.
